Locum Tenens Hematology & Oncology Physician – Indiana University Health

Overview

Indiana University Health is seeking a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Hematology & Oncology Physician for an ongoing locum tenens coverage opportunity at IU Health Arnett Hospital and IU Health Arnett Cancer Center. This role features a balanced practice setting involving both outpatient clinic coverage and inpatient call.

Position Highlights & Schedule

Outpatient Clinic: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (36 hours of patient care/ambulatory clinic coverage per week). Includes 30 minutes of admin time and a 1-hour lunch.

Call Coverage: Call rotation every 4th or 5th week for one full week at a time.

Beeper call with a 30-minute required response time.

Weekday (M–F) hospital visits for new consults; Saturday/Sunday visits for rounding and emergent consults.

Phone consults average 5–6 per week with minimal call-back (<10%).

Patient Volume & Mix: 15–18 patients per shift. Patient mix is approximately 70% Oncology and 30% Hematology (primarily benign cases).

Practice Support: Outpatient-focused model. Nurse Practitioners round on existing patients, while the on-call provider manages new consults. Supervision of APPs is required.

EMR: Cerner

Requirements & Qualifications

Education: Fellowship-trained in Hematology & Oncology.

Certification: Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine - Oncology. BLS certification required.

Privileging: Hospital privileges required (90-day estimated credentialing timeframe; temporary privileges not available).

Onboarding Preferences: Candidates with an active Indiana medical license and active DEA, clean malpractice/NPDB history, minimal practice gaps (<6 months), and 3–4 professional references are preferred for rapid onboarding.
